Mary Shelly Rae


Mary Shelly Rae of Navasota went home to be with the Lord on May 20, 2009. She was the fourteenth child born to Jesse James and Jessie Lee Shelly on November 13, 1945 in Huntsville, Texas.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents: brothers: Milton, Melvin, Edward, Jesse, Ernest, Roy, Walter, John Shelly and sisters Bernice Humphrey, Joyce Rae and Annie Underwood

She is survived by: husband, Douglas Rae of Navasota; sons: Mark Goodrow and wife LaWanna of Huntsville; Steven Goodrow and wife, Wendy of College Station, and daughter Teresa Lawson of Huntsville; stepdaughters, Stacey Callas and husband Randy of England, AR and Sherry Ortega, of Huntsville; brothers: Marvin Shelly and wife Joanne, of Huntsville; sisters: Lois Batchelor of Carrollton; (6) grandchildren, (7) step-grandchildren and a number of other family and friends.

Mary attended school in Huntsville. She devoted many years of service to our community through her work in the Huntsville Memorial Hospital cafeteria and in her leisure time, loved gardening. She always displayed a positive attitude of life even while on full oxygen and in poor health for the last seven years. Mary was truly a role model in facing each day with enthusiasm and gratitude for the blessings shared each day.

Services will be held 2:00pm Sunday, May 24 in the chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be Saturday, May 23 from 5 – 8:00pm at the funeral home. A luncheon will be provided at the Pine Prairie Free Will Baptist Church after the service. Services will be officiated by Donald Shelly. Pallbearers will be Bobbie Blair, Danny Upchurch, Dale Morgan, Johnnie Frost, Ted Russell, and Brian Shelly; honorary pallbearers, Linda Blair, Pam Upchurch, Shelly Morgan, Debra Frost, Kathy Russell, and Donna Humphrey.
