VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES
| | | Preston Jr. Murphy, of Huntsville, went home to be with the Lord on June 7, 2009.
He was the 11th child born to Thomas Preston and Mary Etta Childs on January 16, 1926, in Panola County, Texas. Preston was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Willie, Elmo, Jeff, Rayford; and sisters, Wilma, Audry, Era, and Thelma.
He is survived by his wife, the love of his life for 61 years, Billie Marie Peace of Huntsville. Also his son, Doug Murphy and wife Sandy of Keller, and daughter Becky Frezia and husband Wayne of Huntsville, three grand children, and 4 great grandsons.
Preston served in the United States Navy in the Marshall Islands during W.W. II, serving there from 1944 to 1946. In August of 2007, he received his 50 year pin as a Master Mason from the Mt. Moriah Lodge #37 in Cold Springs.
Preston and Billie moved from Houston to Oakhurst in 1975; soon after being employed by Huntsville Memorial Hospital, in the Maintenance Department. Billie opened a Beauty Salon and they joined the Calvary Baptist Church. Together, they helped to organize and establish the Oakhurst Volunteer Fire Department, where Preston served as Fire Chief for 13 years.
December of 1996, Preston and Billie sold their home in Oakhurst, and purchased property and built another home in the Crabb Prairie area.
Preston was well known for being a truly "neighborly" neighbor. He was always willing to lend an ear, a helping hand, and advise. Preston had the gift of being able to listen to and solve any mechanical problem friends and neighbors may have had. Another pastime he enjoyed was fishing ... especially "trot" - line fishing.
Most of all, Preston loved his family, and loved hosting annual family reunions, which continued for the past 40 years. Many "Fish Fries" were enjoyed during these gatherings. Preston will be buried at County Line Cemetery in Rusk County. He will be dearly missed and always treasured in the memories of family and friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, June 10 at 2:00pm in the chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-8:00pm on Tuesday, June 9.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
