VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES
| | | Silman Morris James, born August 13, 1922, to Crawford Sidney James and Martha Thorne James in Delwin, Texas, passed away July 31, 2009, in Huntsville, Texas. S.M. grew up in the Texas Panhandle near Silverton. He married Emma Jeanne Wells of Lone Star on March 3, 1945. S.M. was employed as Parts Manager by the Winn Ford Motor Company and the Jack Morris Ford Motor Company in Plainview, Texas, from 1948 until his retirement in 1992. He then moved to Comanche, Texas, where he farmed for ten years, then moved to Ruidoso, New Mexico, in 2001, and finally settled in Huntsville, Texas, in 2004.
During World War II, S.M. was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in the 1521st Army Air Force Base Unit , stationed at Hickam Field in Hawaii, Pacific Theatre. He worked on the flight line repairing and replacing aircraft engines and specialized in aircraft electrical systems.
He was preceded in death by Jeanne, his wife of 62 years, his parents, his brothers Marvin, Gerald, and Clifton, and sisters Lottie, Oreta, and Bonnie, brothers-in-law James Quisenberry, Hubert Griffith, and Tom Ed Wells.
He is survived by son Tommy R. James and wife Lyn of Tempe, Arizona, daughter Yvonne James Blair and husband Gene of Huntsville, granddaughter Melissa Blair Jackson and husband Mark of Tomball, Texas, and sisters-in-law Bertha James, Jan James, Nell Quisenberry, Jo Griffith, and Wilma Wells, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
S.M. was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing. He was an expert mechanic who enjoyed restoring old tractors, cars, and pick-ups. He loved vacationing with his family in Lake City, Colorado. He was happy in retirement riding with his dog on his restored 8N Ford Tractor on his farm at Comanche. Though a dog person at heart, after his wife’s passing, he continued her love for their two cats, grew to love them just as much as she did, and even acquired several more of his own.
Services for S.M. will be held Monday, August 3, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, with Dr. Richard Rogers officiating. A visitation time will precede the service from 10:00-10:30a.m. Interment will follow in Plainview Cemetery on Wednesday, August 5, at 1:00 p.m., following a graveside service.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests consideration of a contribution in S.M.’s memory to the University Heights Baptist Church building fund, 2400 Sycamore Ave., Huntsville, Texas 77340.
