Milton Cay Walters, recently of Huntsville, Texas, was born on May 5, 1928 in Jasper County, Texas to Arcay and Lillie Walters. He passed away on August 9, 2009 in Bryan, Texas at age 81.

In Buna, Texas, he went to Caro Springs Elementary School and Buna High School and worked on the family dairy farm growing up and eventually in the shipyards in Beaumont, Texas. After joining the army and serving in the Korean War, he went to Sam Houston State Teacher’s College and obtained dual degrees in Industrial Arts and Industrial Drafting. As a member of The Ravens, he participated in numerous events, including Pioneer Roundup. He met Opal Payne and married her on April 9, 1955.
While in Waco, Texas, he worked for Waco Public Schools as Warehouse Manager and Textbook Custodian and son, Dwayne Walters was born on January 16, 1957. While in Waco he was active in the Speegleville Saddle Club, Trinity Methodist Church, YMCA Indian Guide and later square dancing clubs.

Moved to Woodville, Texas in the summer of 1967 and became owner/operator of White’s Auto Store, working many hours per week for three years. After selling the store, he took a job at the local school teaching Industrial Cooperative Training (ICT) in 1970 and this job and the associated VICA club connected him with numerous high school students. He was involved in many activities including The Methodist Church, Volunteer Fire Department, Lions Club and Scout Master for Troop 54. He also received his Master’s Degree from SHSU.

He moved to Huntsville in 1980, and found an opportunity to teach and to move closer to the Payne Ranch and Opal’s mother, Idelle. Summer jobs included ranch work, rent houses, and numerous other odd jobs. He became involved in the structuring of the Crabbs Prairie Volunteer Fire Department and served as their first chief. He was involved with supervised projects with the Walker County Fair. He truly enjoyed serving as director for Mid-South –Synergy for fifteen years and as a director of Walker County Rural Water for twenty-one years. Retiring in 1985, the part-time jobs became his full-time job. In addition to his own chores, he always found time to help others.

He was preceded in death by parents and sister, Jean Eddy. He is survived by wife, Opal Payne Walters, only child, Dwayne Walters and wife Diane, two grandsons, Brandon Walters and Kent Walters and wife Cesara, siblings, Iris Flowers, Nita Wellman and Raymond Walters.

Service will be Wednesday, August 12, 2009 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Huntsville, Texas. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2009 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville.
