Margaret Hazel Howell Copeland

After 84 life-fulfilling years here on earth, Hazel Copeland, of Oakhurst, Texas, went home to meet Jesus on December 6, 2011. Hazel was born on November 11, 1927, in Mexia, Texas to Walter and Margaret Howell. She was the oldest of 4 daughters.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Will A. Copeland, Sr., her parents, and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter Margie Gresham and husband Bobby, daughter Janie Klimple and husband Bobby, son Will Copeland, Jr. and wife Jo Ann, grandchildren Tammy and Pat O’Brien, Teri and Jeff Hartlage, Tina and David Clark, Doyle and Kari Miller, Debra Miller, Trey and Amanda Copeland, Tracie and Bubba Hoot, and Tana Sublett, as well as, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Hazel and Will Senior moved from Houston to retire in Oakhurst where they lived out their remaining years farming and raising cattle. Hazel was a strong, independent woman who did not shy away from hard work. After losing her husband to cancer in 1998, Hazel went back to school in 2001 to complete her General Education Development which made her the proud owner of her GED at the age of 73. She then went on to work as a substitute teacher while continuing to work the farm. She also devoted several years volunteering at the Senior Citizen Community in Pointblank and was a faithful member of the Center Hill Baptist Church of Oakhurst.

Visitation will be held on Saturday Dec. 10, 2011 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. The funeral service will be held at Center Hill Baptist Church in Oakhurst, Texas, on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Immediately following the service the burial will be held at Center Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Texas Baptist Home for Children in memory of Hazel Copeland “Nanny”.
