John C. Welter, Age 83 of Clintonville, formerly of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, August 9, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was a resident of Greentree Health Care Center in Clintonville. John was born December 14, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois a son of the late George and Marcella (Verhasseltt) Welter.
John attended school in Chicago. Following school he entered the United States Army where he served in World War II from 1945-1948. He was in the Army Air Corps, where he served as an airplane mechanic.
Upon returning from the service, John took up the building trades. He was a true craftsman in his art.
On October 13, 1951 he was united in marriage to the former Doris D. Fischer in Chicago. The couple made their home in Hillside, ILL until 1965 when they moved to Shawano. John continued with his craftsman work and also turned into the accomplished handyman.
His wife preceded him in death on May 15, 1996.
He is a member of St Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville.
In his spare time, John loved to restore old cars and was very proud that they stayed in the family. He was also a licensed airplane pilot. John loved to tinker with all things mechanical.
In June of 1999, he was united in marriage to Winifred Malliet at St Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville. Winifred survives him.
He is further survived by five children-Joan (Randy) Plato of Sussex, WI; Nancy (Steve) Zutavern of Waukesha, WI; Ken Welter of Dallas, TX; Karen (Mark Pasch) Welter of Shawano and Charlie (Stephanie) Welter of Shawano.
Twelve grandchildren-Lea, Ryan, Amy, Eric, David, Kristin, Dan, Lisa, Jake, Tyler Sarah and Stacie.
One brother-Charles (Elaine) Welter of DePere, WI
Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.

A Funeral Mass for John will be celebrated on Monday, August 15, at 11 am at St Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville. Father Jack Mullarkey will be the Celebrant. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Mausoleum, Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano on Sunday, August 14 from 3:30 until 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue Monday morning at St Rose Catholic Church from 10 AM until the hour of service.
In Lieu of flowers and plants the family has requested memorials to the Shawano County Humane Society in the name of John C. Welter.
