| | | Yaeko “Mickey” Benedict was born September 8, 1932 in Gatenba City, Shizouka, Japan. She passed away on Friday morning, April 24, 2009 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 16 days.
Mickey grew up in Japan and attended school through the eighth grade in Japan. On February 6, 1953 she was united in marriage to Merril Wesley “Pete” Benedict in Nagoya, Japan. This union was blessed with one son, Wesley. The couple spent six months in Japan following their marriage. They then lived all over the world while Pete was in the service. Following his retirement, Pete and Mickey settled in Farragut, Iowa.
One of Mickey’s proudest accomplishments was becoming a United States citizen on October 2, 1959. She was able to accomplish this with no formal American education. Mickey worked as a cook for over 30 years at both the Hand Hospital and the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. She loved to cook for her friends and family, enjoyed her garden and liked to drink coffee at the Admiral Inn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete; and her son, Wesley.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Holly Benedict of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Jay Benedict and his wife Annette of Storm Lake, Iowa, Thea Bryan and her husband Aaron of Omaha, Nebraska, Amy McGargill of Shenandoah, Iowa, Jacob Benedict and his wife Julie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Nick McGargill and Jocelyn McGargill of Shenandoah, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.
