VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES
| | | Dorothy Arlene Wallin was born September 18, 1918 near Farragut, Iowa, the daughter of Seth and Mamie (Allen) Cox. She passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 9 days.
Arlene attended school at Farragut and, while she was in the 4th grade, she and her classmates moved into the second floor of the new school house which is on Main Street in Farragut. Arlene loved music and took an active part in singing with the various groups and playing the violin, piano and the organ. She graduated from Farragut High School with her class in 1936.
In the summer of 1936 she joined the Farragut United Methodist Church and she was a member of the church choir. On occasion Arlene and her father, Seth Cox, would sing duets at Radio Station KFNF. This is where Arlene’s future husband first heard of her and wanted to meet her.
Following high school Arlene worked in the offices of Henry Field, Radio Station KFNF and Mt. Arbor Nursery. In the 1950’s she worked briefly for Lakes Nursery during their busy season as a typist.
On February 19, 1939 Arlene married Glenn Wallin of Essex, Iowa. They were married at the Bethesda Lutheran Church Parsonage and were members of that church until they moved to Shenandoah. After moving, they joined the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where Arlene kept her membership after Glenn passed away on October 21, 2001.
To this union, two daughters were born; Betty Mae and Marian Jane. Betty married Gene Bengtson from Imogene, Iowa and they now reside outside of Midway, Texas. Their marriage blessed them with two children; daughter, April Burton and husband Gary, and son, Keith Bengtson. Jane married Douglas Shough from Omaha, Nebraska, where they make their home.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Mamie Cox; her husband Glenn; and a sister, Thelma Macdonald.
Glenn and Arlene earned their living as farmers in the Page and Fremont County areas. Arlene was a homemaker and helped Glenn with the farming. They semi-retired from farming in the 1970’s after Glenn suffered a heart attack.
Glenn and Arlene enjoyed their winter home in Arizona for 16 years. Their children, family and friends always enjoyed visiting them during the cold Iowa months. They became residents at Gardenview Care Center on October 4, 1999.
