  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Rachael Flo Hoffman was born October 3, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of William Floyd and Vivian Marie (Lang) Kalkas. She passed away on Friday morning, October 23, 2009 at the Red Oak Nursing & Rehab Center in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 69 years and 20 days.

Rachael grew up in southwest Iowa and received her education at country schools. She later attended Villisca High School. As a young girl Rachael enjoyed riding her horse, Lady, going to horse shows and rodeos where she competed in barrel racing. She was very proud when she brought home ribbons she won in these events. She also enjoyed playing softball and listening to Elvis on the radio. She liked to think of herself as Elvis’s biggest fan.

On October 21, 1957, she was united in marriage to Walter Lewis “Pete” Hoffman in Clarinda, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children; Ernest, Thomas, William and Donella. They raised their children in southwest Iowa and north central Arkansas. Rachael took great pride in her children and was a wonderful mom. She and Lewis loved to go square dancing and she spent some of her time sewing square dancing outfits for the both of them. Even though she was busy working to help support the family, she always made time for her children, family and friends.

She was a wonderful cook. One of her greatest joys was making huge family dinners. Her special fried chicken will be long remembered and missed as well as her loving and caring nature.

When the kids were grown Rachael was able to go with Lewis on his over the road trucking job. She talked a great deal about how much she enjoyed their time together and all of the beautiful country they saw. After Rachael and Lewis retired they moved back to Stanton, Iowa. Rachael then spent her time reading, watching her stories on television, playing bingo with friends and enjoyed her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Hoffman; three grandchildren, Robert Lewis Hoffman, Thomas E. Hoffman, Jr., Tonya Marie Hoffman; a great granddaughter, Brooklyn Joann Baucom; and a brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Alice Kalkas; brothers-in-law, Tom, Dick and Dallas Hoffman; and sisters-in-law, Iva, Cora and Wonda.
