| | | Robert W. Risteen of Montgomery, Texas, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 14, 2008, of melanoma cancer. Bob had successfully fought and survived the disease for over 14 years. Bob was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Dec. 3, 1925, to Joseph W. and Stella Risteen. He attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, and immediately upon turning 18, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country aboard the U. S. S. Roi, CVE 103 (Casablanca Class), as Aviation Ordanceman 3rd Class (Aircraft Turret Specialist). After the war, he attended Pennsylvania State University, and graduated from Indiana University. He earned not only his degree in business, but a commission in the United States Air Force Reserve. He joined the 3M Company and embarked on a successful career of sales and sales management.
In 1975 he was named Vice President of Marketing for Varco Pruden, an international steel building manufacturer in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1986 he returned to the academic world for an additional degree and later, taught sales, marketing, and management courses as an Associate Professor at Ohio University and Kent State University. He was active in the Methodist Church, the Republican Party, the National Association of Scholars, the Walden Men's Association, the Montgomery County Shrine Club, and until recent years, the Legion of Honor. He was recently recognized for 50 years of service as a Mason, Mystic Valley Lodge, Arlington, Maine.
In 1990 he decided to locate World War II shipmates to form an association and found many across the United States. Bob organized their reunions, and served as President of the U. S. S. Roi, CVE 103, Crew Association for many years.
Bob was predeceased by his first wife of 28 years, Nancy (Smith) Risteen of Indianapolis, his parents, and his brother, Richard Risteen. Memories of Bob will be treasured by his present wife of 28 years, Mary Kathryn (Buss) Risteen of Weslaco, Texas, his sons: Russell and wife Katja of Naples, Florida; Reed and wife Abbie of Keller, Texas; and daughter, Lisa Kathryn Taylor and husband Steve of Valencia, California, as well as 6 grandchildren: Amy, Jordan, Dillon, Nathan, Evan, and Addison.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at the Walden Church on Walden Road, Montgomery, Texas, officiated by the Rev. Jim Hunt, on Monday, May 19, at 11:00 am.
