Merrick was born on April 22, 1918, fifteen miles southeast of Richey on the homestead of his parents, Antonia and Frank Benes. Both of his parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia, Frank in 1905 and Antonia in 1912. At the age of seven, Merrick contracted polio. His mother used her healing skills and was able to save his leg. During the 1930's, Merrick worked on the Fort Peck Dam. He attended Morning Side Country School and graduated from Richey High School with the class of 1938. He then began farming with his father and in 1944 purchased a farm five miles south of Richey. Merrick met Lorraine Knutson at a dance in Richey and they were united in marriage on November 16, 1947 in Richey. Together they expanded the farm and raised three daughters, Laurel, Deborah and LaDonna. During this time he also served on the school board and the A.S.C. Board.
Merrick was proud farmer of sixty-five years. Throughout his life, Merrick loved to talk politics and was an avid Democrat. He especially enjoyed dancing. All his life he appreciated nature, especially the deer, birds, the farm cats. He loved his cattle and they knew him when he called. Even after retiring, he made many trips to his farm keeping active by taking care of his trees, equipment and generally enjoying being out in the country that he loved. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren who all live in Montana.
