Budz was born January 25, 1929, in Glendive, Montana, the son of Edward and Esther (Peterson) Austby. He was raised and educated in the Glendive-Wibaux area remaining here his entire life. Budz was one of the original oil field hands. He enjoyed working on ranches and doing what he did best—moving dirt. His favorite job was being a heavy equipment owner/operator.

On December 1, 1951, he married Ardice Hill, and from that union four children were born: Hal, Wade, Vicki, and Todd. Budz and Ardice had many happy years together and remained friends even after separation.

Budz was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Glendive, the Saddle Club and was an avid bowler. Among his favorite things were visiting with friends, old and young alike, watching sports on TV, going for rides in the country and seeing his great-grandchildren ride their horses.

Budz was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Ray Austby and Robert (Jake) Austby, his sister-in-law, Alice Austby, mother and father-in-law, Lester and Alna Hill, and grandson-in-law, Shawn Van Vleet.

He is survived by his three sons: Hal, Wade (Cathy), Todd (Julie) Austby, all of Wibaux, his daughter, Vicki (Jim) Dykins of Beach, ND, Grandchildren: Mindy Van Vleet, Staci (Russ) Schell, Naomi (Steve) Grove, Alissa (Tracy) Welch, Jay (Lindsay) Dykins, Amanda Grigsby, Kayla (Robert) Kremers. Great-grandchildren: Vanesa Van Vleet, Calob Grigsby, Zayda Grove, Jewelia Grigsby, Keaton Schell, Jase Grigsby, Amya Welch, Jayley Welch, and Aubrie Dykins. His sister-in-law Fern Austby, his ex-wife Ardice Austby, two nephews, a niece, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
