Wibaux, Montana: Gary M. Knight, age 64, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, North Dakota. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Wibaux County Fairgrounds in Wibaux with Reverend Larry Phalen officiating. Interment with military honors will be at the Knight family ranch south of Wibaux. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Wibaux has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Gary was born on June 2, 1947 in Beach, North Dakota a son of Rex Sr. and Ludvina (Bachmeier) Knight. He was raised and educated in Wibaux, attending school through the ninth grade. At the age of 13 Gary left home to become a horse jockey. He traveled from Montana to Arizona for a few years racing horses. Gary spent two years in Texas training horses before he moved back to Wibaux in 1967. Upon his return, he was drafted into the United States Army. Before Gary left for Vietnam, he was united in marriage to Bettye McNeil on May 18, 1968 in Wibaux and he was able to witness his first son being born. Gary served his country for two years in the infantry and as a helicopter gunner until his honorable discharge in 1970.
After his honorable discharge from the army, Gary returned to Wibaux where he began his career in ranching. He managed Smith Cattle Inc. for thirty years until 2000. During this time he also bought, traded and sold horses and roping steers as a side business. Gary provided custom CAT work in Wibaux County for a couple of years before he went to work on the Gerald Herigstad ranch in 2002. In 2007, when Gerald passed away, Gary became the ranch manager for Sharon Herigstad until she passed away in 2011. Gary has owned and operated the ranch since.
Ranching has always been in Gary's blood, he loved buying horses and cattle, team roping and riding and training horses. He had a gift of gab, he enjoyed socializing and was known to give people a little hell. In his younger years he enjoyed time spent fishing and hunting, but more the social aspect of the two.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene Lix.
Survivors include his wife, Bettye Knight of Wibaux; two sons, Shawn (Kelli) Knight of Beulah, North Dakota and Al (Lori) Knight of Wibaux; five grandchildren, Al, Dylan, Hayse, Payton and Parker; brother, Rex Jr. (Sandy) Knight of Wibaux; sister, Karen (John) Bishop of Tulsa, Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews.
