Jack Horace Bacon was born April 15, 1924 in Glendive, Montana the 9th of 11 children born to Chauncey and Clara (Carpenter) Bacon. He grew up and attended school in Glendive, Montana graduating from Dawson County High School with the class of 1942. After graduation he worked in the Wibaux area until entering the U.S. Army Infantry on September 13, 1944. Jack served in Okinawa during World War II with the 96th Infantry. He was wounded and in the hospital in Guam when the war ended. Jack received two Purple Hearts and was discharged on August 14, 1946. Jack was very proud of serving his country and in later years enjoyed talking about his experiences. Jack married Ruth Etta Petermann in Wibaux on November 10, 1949 and together they raised six children. In 1954-1955 Jack attended and graduated from Coyne Electric in Chicago, Illinois. He returned to Wibaux with his family and started a television sales and repair shop. Later he put in Wibaux’s first cable TV system. Jack retired from the state of Montana as a Civil Defense Coordinator.
In 1982 he married Janet (VanDaele) Barnhart. This union brought Jack six stepchildren. Jack and Janet lived in Wibaux and were involved in many business ventures. One of many activities that Jack and Janet enjoyed doing together was going to Cody’s football and basketball games. They enjoyed daily coffee outings and could often be found watching their grandchildren’s athletic and school activities.
Jack was a long time volunteer fireman and paramedic. He was very active in Civil Defense and the VFW Post 5611. He played guitar in the 4B’s band and loved carpentry work. He also enjoyed reading, history, and coffee time with his friends. Jack was always ready to help anyone, friend or stranger, and he could be counted on to entertain others with his lively jokes.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Harold and Roy, three sisters Jessie, Clara and Lillian, and one step-grandson, David Schmidt.
Survivors include his wife Janet of Wibaux, Montana; his brother, Jim (Fern) Bacon of Wibaux; his sisters, Dolly (Vaughn) Short of Yucca Valley, California; Betty (Walt) Bonner of Corvallis, Montana; Margaret (Art) Nemitz of Neillsville, Wisconsin, Dorothy (Pete) Kauffman of Glendive, Montana, three daughters, Jacqueline (Randy) Robinson of Billings, Montana, Melodie Heiny of Austin, Minnesota, and Yvette (Dan) Leaman of Harrisburgh, Pennsylvania; three sons, Alan (Nancy Jonas) and Wesley (Linda Rogers), all of Wibaux and Randy (Barbara) of Austin, Minnesota; his daughter-in-law, Carla Bacon of Wibaux; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one step great granddaughter. He is also survived by his six stepchildren, Penney (Mike Houser) Fasching of Phoenix, Arizona; Jean Barnhart of Leavenworth, Washington, Amber (Greg) LaBelle of Wibaux, Cindy (Dave) Young of Phoenix, Arizona, Les (Missy) Barnhart of Miles City, Montana, Cody (Ashley) Barnhart of Phoenix, Arizona; 18 step grandchildren, and five step great grandchildren.
