Gar L. Amundson, age 57, of Glendive, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Glendive Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 9, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Avis Anderson officiating. Interment with Elks Rites will be in the Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Sunday, April 15, 2007 at the First Lutheran Church in Wolf Point, Montana. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Gar was born on May 27, 1949 at Jamestown, North Dakota, the son of Lenroot and Grace (Garmoe) Amundson. Lenroot passed away on April 7, 1952. Gar and his mother then moved back to Glendive where he was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church. He attended Glendive schools and graduated from San Diego Military Academy, San Diego, California in 1968. He graduated from Eastern Montana College, Billings, and received his Doctorate Degree from Montana State University in Bozeman, earning degrees in teaching and school administration.
He was with the Fort Peck Community College, Poplar, Montana, as Dean of Instruction, living in Wolf Point, Montana, where he was a member and President of the Wolf Point School Board. He was Principal at Ekalaka Schools and Superintendent at Wibaux High School. Gar then became Director of Continuing Education at Dawson Community College at Glendive. Gar married Georgia Armour in August 1969 and they later were divorced.
Gar was active in the Elks and elected President of the Montana State Elks Association 2006-2007. He had been appointed to the Governor's Committee on Arts and Humanities. He was a member of the Supervisory Committee of the B.N. Credit Union. He had a license in advanced Ham Radio (WØGAR) and enjoyed playing golf.
Gar was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.
Survivors include his son, Gordon Amundson and his wife Rosemary of Fairbanks, Alaska; his parents, Grace and Norman Lunde of Glendive; his grandson, Olaf Amundson; his brother, Bruce Lunde and his wife Kim and their children, Torvon, Annika and Lars of Diamondhead, Mississippi.
