Eleanor Elizabeth (Finneman) Clarin, age 92, of Wibaux, Montana, formerly of Beach, North Dakota, passed away in Baker, Montana, on Monday, November 2, 2009. Eleanor was born on June 3, 1917, the third child of five born to Herbert and Amelia (Schrom) Finneman; three brothers, Norb, Roman, and Ralph, and one sister, Lorine (all now deceased).

After the loss of her mother at age 8, Eleanor became the surrogate mother helping in the rearing of her siblings during the depression years and cooking for as many as twenty threshers during the harvest season. Eleanor received her education at the Barthel School southeast of Golva and graduated from Golva High School in 1936. She always enjoyed horseback riding, basketball and attending dances.

On November 22, 1938, Eleanor married Robert Clarin at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva. For 62 years, Eleanor and Bob lived one and a half miles north of Golva. Eleanor was an excellent cook. Visitors were always welcome to share the delicious meals of Eleanor's and everyone remembers her prize-winning pies. Family and relatives will always treasure the fond memories of the many Christmas Eves spent at the Clarin farm enjoying lots of good food, good times, an appearance by Santa, sharing gifts and celebrating Midnight Mass together. In July of 2001, Eleanor and Bob moved to the Golden Valley Manor in Beach. Eleanor entered the Wibaux County Nursing Home in Wibaux, Montana, in January of 2009.

Eleanor's primary interest and focus throughout most of her life as a homemaker was her family and relatives. She was a pioneer woman who had a strong spirit, a wonderful sense of humor and took great pleasure in giving. Listening to the music of Lawrence Welk and music from the Big Band Era were her favorites. She always enjoyed family reunions, telling stories of "olden days" and will always be remembered for her remarkable work ethic and devotion to her family, relatives, friends, church and community. Eleanor had a strong commitment to the church and was very active in church work over the years. She was President and Vice-President of St. Mary's Altar Society for seven years. She and co-worker, Lillian Kreitinger, organized the first funeral groups starting in 1951. Eleanor served as chairman on her side for over 30 years. She was a substitute C.C.D. teacher and member of the church choir for many years and was appointed Chairman of the New Church cleaning for several years. She was also President of the band parent association that organized the very first band program in the Golva schools.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sheryll Ann Clarin; a son, James Robert Clarin; her husband, Bob; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Hurley.

Eleanor is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Gerald) Noll of Golva, North Dakota, and Joyce (Tom) Ray of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; three grandchildren, Laurie (Phil) Hurley of Fairview, Montana, Leon (Diane) Noll of Golva, North Dakota, and Daniel (JessiKay) Noll of Golva, North Dakota; seven great-grandchildren, Josh and Hannah Hurley of Fairview, Montana, Sheldon Noll of Bismarck North Dakota, Stephan Noll of Fargo, North Dakota, Logan and Linsey Noll of Golva, North Dakota, and Emery and Sawyer Noll of Golva, North Dakota; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Finneman of Bismarck, North Dakota, Christine Finneman of Golva, North Dakota, Louella Clarin of Beach, North Dakota; one brother-in-law, Darrell (Knute) Knudson of Richardton, North Dakota; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., Thursday, November 5, 2009, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach and from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 6, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva. A Vigil will be held at 7:00 P.M., Thursday, November 5, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 6, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva with Reverend Father David Richter officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Golva. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach is entrusted with arrangements.
