Miles City, Montana: C. Eugene Johnston, age 81, formerly of Richey, Montana, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the Friendship Villa Care Center in Miles City. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive, Montana. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Richey with Pastor Paul Sponheim officiating. Interment will be held in the Bethlehem Mennonite Cemetery in Bloomfield, Montana. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Eugene was born on September 18, 1930 at the family home in Bloomfield, the son of Cecil and Katie (Knels) Johnston. He was raised and educated in Bloomfield where he received his early education. Eugene got sick and was hospitalized with Rheumatic Fever which caused him to have a weak heart and brittle bones preventing him from serving in the military.
Eugene met and later married Kay Whitmer on August 22, 1954. As a couple they were blessed with nine children. In 1974, they purchased the Butterfield property outside of Richey where they designed and built their seventeen room house for their family to live in. Eugene worked a variety of different jobs throughout his lifetime; farming, oil fields and construction. He was a hard worker and was always willing to help someone in need. Eugene enjoyed woodworking and creating new things for his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Katie Johnston; one brother and one sister.
He is survived by his nine children, Kermit Johnston, Vickie (Rod) Albaugh, Cedric (Nancy) Johnston, Joy (Curtis) Waldbauer, Justin (Cyndi) Johnston, Skye (Brad) Young, Cody (Arlene) Johnston, Niaobi (Joe) Wilber and Hope (Patrick) Bowler; twenty-nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.
