Exie was born in Wibaux on April 29, 1922 to Fred and Cora (Reynolds) Polen. Twenty-five years later she earned her Bachelor's Degree, and later she earned a fifth year degree in library science. She had spent the last nineteen years of her thirty-three year teaching career in St. Ignatius, Montana, setting up libraries in the Grade School and High School.
During and immediately following World War II, she had tried to enlist in the WAVES, but was not allowed due to her eyesight. So she worked as a civilian at the Norton Air Force Base earning more than her enlisted friends.
Exie was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-three years, Alois; one son, Alan Bryer; three grandchildren, Jeff, Jenifer, and David; five sisters, Mildred, Eva, Dorothy, Mary and Helen; and three brothers, Roland, Clare and Joe.
Exie is survived by her son, Alvin Bryer of Redding, California; daughters, Cinda (Gregg) Biggs of Billings, Montana, Kathy Bryer of St. Ignatius and Linda (Neil) Halverson of Valleyford, Washington; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Metz of South Carolina; one inherited son, Tom Hafele of Savage, Montana; two inherited daughters, Elaine (David) Swanson of Wells, Nevada and Marian Reidelback of Big Timber, Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers Exie had requested that memorials be made to the Wibaux County Nursing Home, 712 South Wibaux Street, Wibaux, Montana 59353-9022 or to the Senior Citizens Center 212 North Main Street, St. Ignatius, Montana 59865.
