|Helena, Montana: Henrietta Etta Mae Carlson, age 83, of Helena, Montana, formerly of Beach, North Dakota passed away on August 20, 2011 at her home in Hunters Pointe Retirement Center in Helena. A memorial service was held on Friday, September 16, 2011 at the First Lutheran Church in Helena. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the Beach Lutheran Cemetery in Beach with Reverend J.T. Burk officiating. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Etta Mae was born on November 4, 1927 in Beach, a daughter to Andrew and Almeda Carlson. She was raised in a large family being the only girl in the family growing up with six brothers. They lived for many years on a small farm that was straight east of the movie theater, and the street ended with the familys long driveway.
Etta Mae went to school in Beach, and graduated from Beach High School. She attended college at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing, she started her career out with the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Miles City, Montana and took a leave of absence so she could continue her education. From there Etta Mae started attending school at the University of Minnesota, where she received her Masters Degree in Nursing. When returning to her job she was promoted to Assistant Chief Nurse, where she took assignments at other Veterans Hospitals in Hot Springs and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Fargo, North Dakota, and then in Boise, Idaho for several years.
Along with school and work, Etta Mae took care of her mother, after her father had passed away. When her mother passed away she was offered the Chief of Nursing job at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Ft. Harrison, Montana where she remained until her retirement in 1987. After retiring she made Helena her permanent home, volunteering at many places. These are just some places Etta Mae volunteered; St. Peters Hospital, Neighborhood Center, blood pressure checks at the mall, The Alzheimers Association, and also helping with any church project as she was a devoted member of the First Lutheran Church.
Even through all the volunteering Etta Mae still found time to do many things some of these involved; visiting the sick, Senior Companions, Altrusa, Womens Club, Retired Federal Workers, and her Red Hat Club. She was also a member of a busy craft group that met monthly for many years. Etta Mae loved her family very passionately, every moment that was spent with family and friends was precious to her. She also adored her brothers, who loved doting on her.
Etta Mae was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Donald, Edwin, James, and Gil. Sadly her brother Lowell Carlson passed away two months after Etta Mae.
She is survived by one brother, Walter Carlson of Mailwaukee, Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Pat Carlson of Kent, Washington and Mathilda Carlson of Eugene, Oregon; also numerous nieces and nephews.
