Dyek was born on September 1, 1934 in Livingston, Montana, the son of Col. Ivan and Annabelle (Hutchinson) Dyekman. He was raised and educated all around the world as his father was a Colonel for the United States Army. Through his travels he lived in many places, Japan being his favorite. Following his graduation from high school, he moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where he attended Colorado State University. He graduated with the class of 1960 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Dyek enjoyed golf, whether it was playing the game or just watching it on the television. He also enjoyed bowling. He was a member of the Montana Veterinary Medical Association. He was very passionate about his work, and enjoyed working with large animals. Most of all he enjoyed the people he met and the friendships he made working with the local farmers and ranchers.
