On May 9, 1925, Cora Janke was born in the family farmhouse of Ernest and Susie Janke near Richey, Montana. Cora had one sister, Dorothy and two brothers, Ed and Harry. She grew up on the family farm and attended Victory School, which was very close to her home. Cora took high school by correspondence courses from the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. Her education was cut short due to the sudden death of her mother. In 1947, Cora taught the Lower Crackerbox School, having six grades out of the eight. There she met Johann Gaub and they were united in marriage on June 18, 1947 in the Bethlehem Mennonite Church near Bloomfield, Montana. They made their home Northeast of Circle, Montana, leasing the John Mahlstedt farm, where their daughter, Alice and son, Marvin were born.
Cora and John purchased two acres of land a few miles west of Glendive where they built a home for their family and started a poultry business. In 1956, their son Orville was born. Cora worked for years as a Professional Domestic, cleaning houses and various other jobs. In the fall of 1977, she started working with Bob Baker in the construction business; painting, wallpapering, sheet rocking, taping and texturing as well as rebuilding houses, traveling and working in four states. In 1948, Cora became a member of the United Brethren Church, now known as the Evangelical Church of North America, of which Cora is a charter member. Cora was actively involved in the life of this church, serving as pianist, organist, church council member and was the financial secretary for more that twenty-five years. She also enjoyed donating a lot of her time and energy to painting and remodelling the church building as well as the church parsonages.
Cora very much enjoyed and loved her family and friends, especially children. Cora brought her green thumb talent from farming into their home with large gardens, flowers and other plants. She specialized in African Violets and enjoyed creating new varieties.
Cora was an interior-decorating specialist and enjoyed making buildings and homes beautiful with repairs and decorations. Her beloved List Creek farm near Richey, which her father purchased around 1914, was sold to Bruce Smith in 2003.
Cora was deeply loved by all and will be greatly missed. But, this is only a home going for Cora and we look forward to the day we see her again in Heaven.
Cora was preceded in death by her husband, Johann on May 20, 1996; her parents, Ernest and Susie Janke; brother, Harry and sister, Dorothy.
Cora leaves behind one daughter, Alice Gaub of Pomona, California; two sons, Marvin Gaub and his wife, Peg of Mandan, North Dakota and Orville Gaub of Glendive; two grandchildren, Rebecca Lengenfelder and her husband, Kris of Bismarck, North Dakota and Steve Gaub of Tujunga, California; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Alexandria, Austin, William, Luke and Vincent Lengenfelder all of Bismarck; her special adopted grandchildren, Mike, Bryan, John Paul, Ben, Leah and Cora Joann; one brother, Ed Janke and his wife, Sylvia of Tucson, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends and long time business partner, Bob Baker; physician, Carleen Gaub; and home health care provider, Linda Baker who enabled Cora to live in her home, until Cora’s passing, which was Cora’s desire.
