Marvin E. Johnson, 73, of 507 Tennyson Avenue, a life-long resident of Stratford, Iowa died at his home on Tuesday evening, April 21, 2009.

Marvin, son of Garrett and Nettie (Carlstedt) Johnson, was born at Stratford on August 23, 1935. Following his education at Stratford, he worked as a farm laborer, tiler, well-driller and trucker.

Marvin served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1958-1960 as driver for the company commander. Following military service, he returned to trucking and well-drilling and in 1971, he began farming.

On February 23, 1963, Marvin married Dixie Gabrielson at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford. After residing in Boone for 1 1/2 years, they returned to Stratford in 1964.

Marvin attended Calvary United Methodist Church and was a member of the Stratford American Legion Frederick Sonksen Post #576. His interests were his family, hard work, history of the Stratford community, farm auctions, fixing machinery and dancing.

Preceding Marvin in death were his parents; 2 sisters Marcella Bergman and Shirley Vinchattle; and 2 brothers Orland and Orval.

Survivors include his wife Dixie of Stratford; a daughter Gwen Hoffmann and husband Bob of Audubon, Iowa; a son Matthew Johnson and wife Nancy of Hugoton, Kansas; 5 grandchildren Whitney and Andrew Hoffmann and Elizabeth, Sarah and Rebecca Johnson; a brother Phillip Johnson of Jewell; and a sister Phyllis Peterson of Wathena, Kansas; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford on Sunday afternoon, April 26th at 1:30 p.m. with Revs. Gina Spohnheimer and Remy Panlaqui officiating.

Burial will be at South Marion Cemetery southeast of Stratford with flag presentation by the American Legion Frederick Sonksan Post #576 of Stratford.

Visitation will be at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford on Saturday evening, April 25th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present to greet friends at that time. Visitations continue Sunday afternoon at the Church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.
