| | | Ethel Brown, 97, formerly of 1804 West Mamie Eisenhower Avenue passed away at the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone on Sunday afternoon, June 14, 2009 where she had been a resident since May of 2004.
She was born on August 17, 1911 in Boone, Iowa the daughter of Luther and Helga (Carlson) Shaffer.
On August 3, 1935, she married Leonard “Mike” Brown at Boone, Iowa.
Ethel was a 1929 graduate of Boone High School. Following graduation, she began working for Holst Farms as the office manager, a position she held until her retirement. She enjoyed reading, tending to her flower gardens and loved taking care of her cats.
She attended the Marion Street United Methodist Church where she was baptized; and was a past member of AARP, Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad and the Boone Historical Society.
Her parents; husband Mike in August of 1989; 2 brothers Charles “Ducky” Hilts and George Hilts, Jr.; and 1 sister Dorothy Dettman preceded her in death.
Survivors include a sister Hattie Bell of Victoria, Minnesota, nieces and nephews.
Ethel’s wishes were to be cremated.
Graveside services with interment to follow will be held on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone with Pastor Duane Lundberg officiating.
Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct their gift to the Boone Area Humane Society or the Evangelical Free Church Home.
