John Echternach, 84, formerly of Boone, passed away at his home in Lakeland, Florida on Monday, July 27, 2009 due to cancer.

He was born on June 12, 1925 in Boone, Iowa the son of Chester and Norma (Mauch) Echternach.

John lived his early years in Boone graduating from Boone High School in 1943. Following graduation, he joined the Navy and served on an LST in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He entered college, was recalled to service during the Korean War, and was a commissioned officer as an Army pilot.

In 1961, he moved to Sidney, Nebraska. He was always involved in finance and business and eventually became Vice President of First State Bank of Lodgepole, Nebraska.

His parents and a brother, Chet preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Mary Jane Echternach; a daughter Pattilee Brown; 2 sons Ron Echternach and Tim Echternach and wife Sara all of Columbia, Missouri; a stepson Brett Downey and wife Judy of Chicago, Illinois; a brother Harry Echternach of Whittier, California; a sister Joyce Dunn and husband Chuck of Burns Flat, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

His body has been cremated.

Graveside services and interment, with full military honors with presentation of the flag will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council, will be held on Saturday morning, October 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone with Dr. Marcia Rich officiating.
