| | | Mr. William Thomas Baldwin Jr. Age 91, of Forrest City, Arkansas died Friday, May 1, 2009 at his home. Mr. Baldwin was born October 19, 1917 in Hickory Ridge, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas Baldwin, Sr. and Gertrude Lawrence Baldwin, a brother Sidney Baldwin, and a son Thomas J. Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was a 1939 graduate of Arkansas State University where he lettered four years in basketball and was a two-time All-State selection. He was also a member of the ASU Letterman’s Club. Mr. Baldwin served in the 9th Army Field Artillery during World War II where he achieved the rank of Captain. On April 11, 1946, he married Violet Dowless of Monette, Arkansas.
Mr. Baldwin was a retired Internal Revenue Service agent, a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Forrest City, member and past President of the Forrest City Lions Club and a member of NARFE and VFW. He enjoyed golf and was an avid sports fan.
He is survived by his wife, a son, David S. Baldwin and wife Ruth of Forrest City; a daughter, Dian Baldwin Bacon and husband Robert of Fayetteville. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Susan Blakely Baldwin, and Katherine Elizabeth “Katie” Bacon, and two grandsons, William T. “Trey” Baldwin III, and William Robert "Bill" Bacon; a sister-in-law, Thelma Baldwin and a nephew, William Sidney Baldwin and wife Gail, all of Heber Springs.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 4, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Forrest City. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, and visitation with the family afterwards.
