Vernon Sammons passed away on October 11, 2006 at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton, Kansas at the age of 100 years and 5 months. Vernon was born in Webster, Kansas to W.H. and Emma (Combs) Sammons on May 8, 1906. He was a lifelong Rooks County resident. Vernon attended Concordia Business College. Prior to farming, he was employed by the bank at Webster, Kansas. He then combined a successful insurance business with farming. Also, he was “the tax man” for many Rooks County residents.
Vernon married Agnes Biery on September 4, 1925. They had 4 children: Ted Sammons and wife Jean of Hays, Kansas; Dee Sammons and wife Wanda of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Reverend Ronald Sammons and wife Jeanne of Seattle, Washington; Wanda Cramer and husband Del of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Ted and Ron preceded Vernon in death. His wife Agnes died September 21, 1982. Vernon’s brother Denzil Sammons and sister Mabel Anderson preceded him in death.
Vernon married Mabel Bartlett on October 20, 1983. She died on September 15, 1989. His dear friend in recent years, Ione (Reed) Elliott, died September 21, 2003.
Vernon was blessed with 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm at the Stockton Funeral Chapel, 805 N. Cedar, Stockton, KS 67669.
Services will be at 11 am at the Stockton Funeral Chapel on Friday, October 13, 2006. Burial will be in the Stockton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Stockton United Methodist Church or the Solomon Valley Manor and may be sent in care of the funeral chapel.
