Minnie Leigh Thompson Long, 94 of Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, NC died Thursday Oct. 22, 2009 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC daughter of the late W. L. “Sheriff” Thompson and Mrs. Minnie Markham Thompson and was the widow of John Burke Long to whom she was married to for over fifty years. She was a member of the Kenly United Methodist Church and a graduate of East Carolina University. Mrs. Long taught for over forty years, which allowed her to teach two and three generations in the same families. She considered all her students to be a part of her larger family and was a strong believer in the importance of education.
Mrs. Long was a member of the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, professional organizations NAE and NCAE and various civic and church organizations.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Martha Ann Long Shuler, her brothers W. F. “Mickey” Thompson and R. M. “Pete” Thompson. Survivors include a sister Gertrude Kastner and husband Edward of Chapel Hill, NC a sister in law Jane Thompson of Elizabeth City, NC, nieces Isabelle Thompson of Auburn, AL, Gayle Norton of Raleigh, NC, Sue Thompson of Corapeake, NC, Shari Farless of Edenton, NC, nephews Ray Thompson of El Cajon, CA, Lewis Long of Waxhaw, NC, and a number of great nieces and nephews; special friends Gail Eason, Betty Jo Wroblewski, Jackie Cockrell, Glenn Raines and the late Suzanne Bailey and also the staff of Carolina Meadows.
Graveside services for Mrs. Long will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 am in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Jim Reid. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service. Another memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 1:30 pm at the Kenly United Methodist Church in Kenly, NC. In lieu of flowers the family request that contributions be made to the Kenly United Methodist Church, PO Box 155, Kenly, NC 27542-7736 or to ones’ favorite charity.
