Mildred Collins Powell, 90, of 3907 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Sentara Barco Nursing Center, Barco, NC. Born in Hurlock, MD, she was the daughter of the late John Wilson and Hattie Helen Bowdle Collins and was the widow of Mr. John Thomas Powell. Mrs. Powell was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1954 as a Supply Sergeant. During her service in the Army she was awarded the Good Conduct Medal with one Clasp, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, and the National Defense Medal. From 1973 until 1984 Mrs. Powell had worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Firestone Tire Company. She was a Presbyterian.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her daughter, Donna Jackson and husband Eldon; grandchildren, Denise Jackson, and Robert Jackson; great grandchild, Nalani Jackson; a sister, Annabelle LeCompte and husband Leonard; nieces, Jill Benjoya, Cindy Picard and husband Jerry, and Paulette Traverse; and nephews, Jack Garris, and Bill Smith and wife Betty.
