Mary M. Potter
Elizabeth City, NC Resident

Mary Katherine McGuinness Potter, 44, of 70 Small Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died November 1, 2009 in Elizabeth City. Mary lived life to the fullest, from being a head cheerleader and valedictorian at Columbia High (1983) to being a very successful businesswoman at Booz Allen Hamilton. Her torch burns bright like a magnet to all the people around her, to meet Mary was to never forget her. Born in 1965 as Mary Katherine McGuinness she would tell you, “I’m an Irish Girl”, with her long flowing red hair, freckles, and vibrant personality to match. After an evening of being with her husband and friends, playing guitar, and singing on her boat that she loved, Mary’s torch was extinguished while she laid quietly in her sleep. As a metaphor on how she lived life, her last day on earth was warm and happy with an evening that brought a full moon lighting up the sky. The morning of November 1st, 2009 the skies turned gray and the air cold with rain as all who knew her burst into tears to learn of her death.

Mary is now in the company of her first son, Dustin Matthew Lane, and her father William T. McGuinness. Mary leaves behind her son Keegan Lane, mother Katie McGuinness, sisters Diann and Karen, brother Blair, step-son and step daughter Eric and Jessica Potter, father-in-law and mother-in-law Stan and Delia Potter, a large group of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, and her best friend and husband, Allen Potter.

Mary would tell all you people with tears in your eyes – go ahead and cry now, but in the future when you think of me you better have a smile on your face and celebrate life, and my death is nothing more than a stage in life.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Father Doug Reed officiating. A private burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at other times at the residence. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Potter family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
