Eldon Saunders

Eldon Saunders, 96, Hunter, ND died on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, ND.

John Eldon Saunders was born on February 2, 1913 on the family farm near Leonard, ND to Frank and Lulu (Rhoads) Saunders. Eldon graduated from Sheyenne River Academy in Harvey, ND and Valley City Teacher's College with a standard teacher’s degree. He taught in rural schools near Gackle and Park River, ND. During WWII, he was employed by the Douglas Overseas Project where he was a civilian repairing airplanes in Eritrea on the east coast of Africa.

Eldon married Elaine Henderson on April 5, 1945 in Fargo, ND. They made their home near Hunter where they farmed for many years. In 1994, they retired and moved to West Fargo, ND. She died in 1998. Eldon entered the Good Samaritan Center in 2007.

Eldon was a man of many interests, talents, and was a life long learner. He was an experienced carpenter and enjoyed restoring cars, flying airplanes, traveling, oil painting, wood carving and reading. He was a person of integrity and an active member of the community.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda (Gary) Withey of West Fargo, ND, Phyllis (Michael) Wyum of Rutland, ND and Marilyn (Paul) Danielson of White Bear Lake, MN; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and George Wiesseman; brother-in-law, Ray Keeney both of Loma Linda, CA; and sister-in-law, Ethel Henderson of Columbia Heights, MN.

He was preceded in death by his wife; brother, Francis "Bud" Saunders; and sister, Faith Keeney.

Memorial Service: Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1 PM at First Lutheran Church, Hunter, ND with visitation one hour prior.

Final Resting Place: Hunter Cemetery.
