Veteran Benefits
The following are general guidelines for veteran’s death benefits. It is possible that the benefits change or that your particular situation may be an exception to the basic procedure. Therefore, these are guidelines and not guaranteed by veteran service or the funeral home. In order to apply for any benefits, one must have a DD214 form (honorable discharge paper). This has most of the pertinent information on each veteran. BASIC GUIDELINES The next of kin may be entitled to the following: Veterans who were honorably discharged: • Burial Flag • Burial Space in Veterans Cemetery • Military Grave Marker (there may be a cost for installing) • Military Rites or Honors (based on the availability of local VFW, American Legion Clubs, or active duty personnel.) Veterans who die in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center or Veterans Home: • Transportation of the deceased paid • Lump Sum Benefit of $600 or $2000 if death was due to a service connected illness Veterans who are in receipt of NSC Pension or compensation for a service connected disability: • Lump Sum Benefit of $600 or $2000 if death was due to a service connected illness Spouses may be eligible for additional death pension benefits. * * * * * * The funeral home will secure the burial flag and make arrangements for military rites if so desired.
