James Robert Mathis, 83, of Spencer, passed away at the Residence at McCormick’s Creek, Wednesday, March 4, 2009. He was born June 12, 1925 in Brown County to Milton and Rose (Hardin) Mathis. James worked as a Superintendant of the State Highway Department in Spencer and ran a saw mill. He was a member of Lifeway Baptist Church. He enjoyed socializing with people and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife, Nellie (Henderson) Mathis, two sons Jimmy Mathis and Tony Mathis of Ellettsville, five daughters Norma (Kenny) Norris of Whitehall, Rosemary (Frank) Robertson of Franklin, Vicky (Jack) Thompson of Spencer, Marilyn Bean of Whitehall, and Kathy (Rick) Barger of Spencer, 14 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death his parents, 5 brothers and sisters, and 2 grandchildren..
Services will be 11 am Monday, March 9, 2009 at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Pastor Kevin Albertson will officiate. Burial will follow at Whitehall Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Spencer American Legion and VFW posts. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday and 9am til the time of the service on Monday.
Memorial contributions may be made the Lifeway Baptist Church.
