At 6:20 pm on May 23, 2009, the spirit of the most wonderful person that God ever allowed to live went to be with the Lord, Pastor Raymond G. Sturgell. He left behind several relatives and friends, too many to mention, but most importantly he left behind a great legacy. Not only did he serve his country, but at the age of 25 enlisted in the army of the Lord and preached his first message in 1938. A man full of zeal for the Lord had the opportunity to go far in the secular world but felt a call in his life after receiving the Holy Ghost to preach the gospel. This is where the legacy of his life really began. Most people that knew him would testify to the fact that God would move on him during his rapid fire secession preaching, quoting scripture after scripture and the fire falling from Heaven would touch all that heard him speak. Bro. Sturgell was referred to as the walking Bible, and when the Holy Ghost began to move nothing could stop him. He was instrumental in seeing many, many people give their hearts to God and seeing God perform miracles right before his eyes. For instance he was at the bed of a small child that had died and by prayer, seeing this child come back to life. Seeing crossed eyes straightened by the power of God, a club foot baby instantly healed a case of epilepsy of a 12 year old boy healed after prayer right in the church. Bro. Sturgell was privileged by God to even see angels, one of which visited him at his bedside in the hospital after a heart attack. The Lord had many, many times come to his rescue in the time of him and his wife’s needs. Times when they were without food, God would supply, times when they were without shelter, God would supply, times when they were without money, God would supply. Testimony after testimony of the goodness of God in his life, revival after revival, service after service, an untiring effort and service for God and people. Bro. Sturgell was also the most liberal giver I do believe I ever met. He and his wife many times would give of their own money to help others many times not receiving anything in return, but receiving a blessing from God from another source, double of what he had done. Bro. Sturgell strived to be the best at whatever he did. He wanted to be an example to all. He did his best to show his family how we should live for Jesus by the Bible route. When in question it was always prayer and the Bible, I’ve heard him tell many times of his visits to the woods for prayer and then hear him say how God came through. It would be impossible to know how many lives he had touched and how many ministers wee inspired by this great man of God. Bro. Sturgell had been part of many projects concerning The First Pentecostal Church of Spencer, IN, which he pastured from 1945-1994. With his wisdom and knowledge the church began to grow both spiritually and literally, and by the liberality of this great man God blessed him and the people of the church. It just seemed that God continued to pour out blessing after blessing for him and his wife. They both were an inspiration to the community of Spencer, IN, known and respected by many. What a great addition he will be to the Heavenly Host of God someday. He has inspired my wife, daughters and I greatly over the years. We have been very close both in sickness and in good health. We have helped him and his wife and they have helped us in too many ways to mention. We will miss him very much and are looking forward to meeting Grandpa and Grandma again someday. As Bro. Sturgell would say, II Tim 4: 7-8, I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Hence forth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge shall give me at that day. Sadly missed by Grandson Mark, wife Dollie and family.
