Eugene Ralph Barnard, age 87, of Melcher-Dallas, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012 at his residence in Melcher. He was born to Earl and Grace (Marshall) Barnard on August 28, 1924 in Oakland, Kansas.
Gene attended high school in Topeka, Kansas and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during WWII as a paratrooper. During his service he became disabled. After his service Gene went to college in Minnesota and graduated with a Radio and Television Engineering Degree.
Gene married Ramona Darlene (Wagner) Mackey on April 7, 1979 in Knoxville. They shared 33 years together.
He worked for WHO Radio and Television in Des Moines for 33 years. After his retirement, he and his wife Ramona, lived in Missouri and for 12 years in Florida working as a C.N.A. They moved to Melcher in 2007. Gene enjoyed talking on his Ham Radio; he was a lifetime member of the Topeka V.F.W. and a member of the Pleasantville Baptist Church.
Gene is survived by his wife Ramona Barnard of Melcher; one daughter Barbara Shultz of Topeka, Kansas; three step children Dale Mackey (Carole) of Bryant, Arkansas, Carol Gillis (Larry) of Irvington, Kentucky, and Robert Mackey (Susan) of Knoxville; and one step son-in-law Ed Marshall of Melcher-Dallas. Gene is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister; two brothers; and his step daughter Robin Marshall.

A memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, April 30th, at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Melcher, with Pastor A.J. Potter officiating.
