Warren Harold Conrad age 91 of Knoxville, Iowa passed away Wednesday July 11, 2012 at Hospice Comfort House of Pella.
He was born November 7, 1920 on the family farm in rural Bennett, Iowa the son of Veno and Neta (Bendigkeit) Conrad. Warren was a graduate of Bennett High School, Class of 1938. After high school he attended Tipton Junior College and played football and basketball. After graduating from Tipton he attended Drake University for two years lettering in varsity basketball and baseball. After two years at Drake Warren transferred to the University of Iowa, and graduated in 1942 with his B.S.M.E. degree in mechanical engineering.
After graduating from college Warren enlisted in the United States Army. He served from 1942 to 1944 during WWII.
On June 26, 1944 at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Iowa City Warren and Catherine Mary Vitosh were united in marriage. They shared 68 years of marriage and were blessed with one son Robert.
Warren worked as a mechanical engineer all his life. He worked in Chicago with Carrier Heating and Cooling and later in Iowa City with heating and cooling before he began working at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. He worked the rest of his career with the Veterans Administration in several different towns. He retired from the VA Hospital in Knoxville.
Warren was very active all his life. He played club basketball and baseball until the age of 34. He was a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, a 50 plus year member of the Masonic Lodge of which he was currently a member of the Tipton Cedar Lodge #11 and a former member of the Knoxville Oriental Lodge #61, and a former member of the Shrine. Warren was also a member of the Howard Cessna Post of the American Legion in Albia.
Warren is survived by his wife Catherine Conrad of Knoxville; their son Robert Conrad of Knoxville; and two grandchildren Ashley Conrad and Kristian Conrad. He is also survived by his brother James Conrad and his wife Gloria of Bennett, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Warren will begin at 5:30 p.m., Friday, July 13th at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville with Masonic Rites open to the public beginning at 5:45 p.m. Warren’s family will greet friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2012 also at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville with Rev. Josyph Andrews officiating. Burial with military honors will follow services at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville.
